Time to know

How much time do any of us have, really?
One thing this crisis has taught us is
Life changes in a flash, death happens when it wants,
And no one knows for sure how any moment may proceed.

Will I finish my memoirs before I die?
Will I paint my masterpiece before I die?
Will I find my True Love before I die?
Will I help one more being to survive?

I don’t really have a bucket list anymore.
I’ve loved and lost. I’ve travelled far enough.
I’ve read lots of books with many more
Waiting their turn of the page

Dreams come and go, morphing as they do
Lives are bonded, and disconnected
Many have left this earthly plane
Many friends and family passed on

So really, what now?
Carry on, get up, feed the cats,
Feed the partner, feed myself,
Feel fortunate that I have made it this far

My brother died years ago
My husband died years ago
My mother and father died years ago
My best friend died years ago

We make new friends, we can’t make new family
But maybe we have a family of friends!
Yes, that is what works for me now,
Having reached this more advanced stage

I still can’t believe it
Where did the time go?
I’ve kept a journal for years
But still, the time goes!

We feel our days pass slowly
We feel our years pass quickly
We watch our children growup
We watch our skin lose its glow

The end is nigh, only so many years left
Or moments, or days. I live them gratefully
Sands of time slipping consistently,
Impartially, through the sieve
